Summer has been FLYING by. Between all of the travel, work obligations and of course the fun, I’ve been trying to squeeze more and more out of my days, trying to turn the seconds into minutes, the minutes into hours, the hours into days, and so on…and on.
I know I can’t actually add more minutes or hours to the day, but I can get creative in how I go about my day to help myself stay on track with my workouts (and life, in general). In fact, rather than adding on to my already overloaded schedule, I’ve added in little things throughout the week that help me make my workouts work for me.
So whether you’ve found yourself in a workout rut or are just looking for ways to squeeze a little more exercise into your day (even when you’re not in your gym clothes), here are a few quick and easy tips (that actually work!) to help you stay motivated and on track:
Workout while you commute: I’ve always been all about the run commutes – typically when I’m making my way out to teach bootcamp or some other sweaty endeavor – a run commute just makes perfect sense. I’m able to squeeze in a quick and efficient workout and then get on with the rest of my day. That said, run commutes don’t always work for every commute…like when I need to run a quick errand…let’s just say I might not always be quick enough on my feet to make that work every time. In the last month or so, I have found a new love for my bike. And all the bike commuting. So whether I’m running errands, running to the studio or off to another coffee shop, I’m getting on the bike to grab a few miles while getting things done. Multi-tasking at its finest!
Phone on the go: When I have a lot of work calls during the day, I grab my trusty Aftershokz, the dog and go for a long walk around the neighborhood. It’s truly a win, win. Taking phone calls on the go not only helps me get the blood flowing and exercise my pooch, the fresh air and movement also helps me be more attentive, creative and productive. Plus, there are less distractions – like say an email popping up that might distract you from your call.
Be a sweet couch potato: We all know sweet potatoes are slightly more beautiful and much healthier than their pale counterparts. So while you’re spending time on your couch or in front of the TV, try to make it time well spent. Consider doing 30 seconds of planks, bicycles, or squats (or all three!) for every 20 minutes you spend on your couch or in front of your TV.
Talk to yourself more! If you’re in a workout rut or having trouble motivating (like say, you’re talking yourself out of that last set of burpees), try talking to yourself. I always talk to myself while I’m running to get my head on straight and use my own words (usually, come on, Jamie…or let’s do this….and sometimes even get it together, girl) to feed myself with the positivity and energy necessary to climb up the next hill or finish the last circuit.
