As a child of the 80’s and 90’s, I have fond memories of chocolate and strawberry milk. I remember receiving cartons of delicious sugary milk straight from our school cafeteria and jealously watching friends unpack Yoohoos from their lunchboxes (the much hipper way to drink sugary milk beverages).
It was perhaps a simpler time – before iPhones became an extension of our bodies, and long before the internet exploded. You didn’t have to worry about your kids posting selfies on Instagram, or installing secret chat apps on their phones; instead you worried when they were hogging your landline, or worse, spending too much time sitting on the couch watching sitcoms.
While life might have felt a little simpler, maybe even more relaxed, it was a confusing time for most of us when it came to nutrition. A healthy packed lunch was typically a sandwich, a bag of chips, a piece of fruit and a sugary beverage (chocolate milk, Kool-aid, Capri Suns, Hi-C….or eek, a soda!), and for the most part, we just didn’t know any better. Sugary drinks in fun plastic containers were pervasive – in our cafeterias, on TV commercials, and in our lunchboxes.
And while I’m “glad” to see so many things from my childhood making a comeback: overalls, bodysuits (ok, actually this still makes me cringe), Birkenstocks, and even scrunchies, I’m glad that sugary beverages are still on their way out (especially now that I’m a mom).
That said, every once in a while I get a hankering for a drink that’s not just plain old milk or water. Something that feels special, or like a treat, but is still good for me. So I got to work in my kitchen and whipped up some creative takes on flavored milk. Whether you’re nostalgic for bright pink or chocolate milk, or want a healthier way to delight your kids, here are some fun, healthy ways to spruce up your milk.
