I started to listen to the podcast, The Longest Shortest Time while I was pregnant; it’s about parenting, pregnancy, and all of the things that intersect with parenthood. The name of the podcast didn’t really register with me at first, in fact I didn’t really ever stop to think about it.
But now that I’ve been a parent for nearly 4 months, I totally get it. On one hand, it already feels like I’ve been a parent for a lifetime, while on the other, it’s all happening too fast. And while I don’t want to miss a moment, there are moments I’d like to fast forward.
The last week and a half of parenting has been pretty challenging: we’ve been figuring out our new childcare routine, juggling our careers, and re-learning how to communicate with one another (which is more difficult than I could have ever anticipated). A big part of me just wishes I could skip all of the figuring out but then again, I don’t want to miss a thing. So what do I do instead?
I celebrate.
The small victories. Taking a shower. Getting some sleep. Making dinner. Shaving my legs. And the big victories. A day of effortless and easy communication. My first big solo adventure away from my little man. Discovering new ways to make my little man smile and laugh. And of course, the days where everything just seems to come together (like ahem, a sleep filled night and a well orchestrated morning).
The celebrations don’t have to be grand to count; in fact, sometimes they are as simple as patting myself on the back via social media, texting a friend, having a glass of wine, curling up with a good book, running with friends, yoga, or even just exchanging a big smile with my partner.
However I choose to celebrate, in whatever manner I celebrate, the one thing that stays constant is that it makes me feel good. It helps me put things into perspective; it’s a constant reminder that everything is fluid. That nothing is permanent. And that in life, in fitness, in work, in parenting, you just have keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Whether you’re a parent, student, professional, artist, or otherwise, there’s always room for celebration. So I’m hoping that we – this amazing community – will come together to celebrate.
You all lift me up and support me when I need you most. You offer me advice, love, and counsel. And you fill me with love. So I celebrate you. And I hope you’ll celebrate me too. I hope you’ll show up for this simple celebration.
