Showing up for myself

November 22, 2015 by Jamie 2 Comments

This last month has been absolutely crazy; the kind of month where I usually find myself knee deep in excuses for not working out. Not getting my runs in. Not eating that healthy.

For starters, I went on a more than two week roadtrip with my mom; the first leg of which included San Diego Tuscon, Albuquerque and then finally to Amarillo where we spent a long weekend celebrating my grandma’s birthday.

And while in Amarillo a super big, exciting thing happened: we signed the lease to our new studio (hooooooooray!!!).

In the midst of getting paperwork signed, emailing contractors and making plans for the new space, we also picked up a Uhaul trailer, loaded it full of furniture for my brother and his fam’s new house in California and then started our journey (via Santa Fe) to Arizona (with our trailer and all) to watch my good friend Jackie absolutely crush Ironman Arizona. And then it was back to California to unload the Uhaul. And then finally, back home to Portland for a few jam packed days of work, studio prepping, and sorting out life before packing up again for our trip to California this week (hellllloooo, Thanksgiving!!).

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about any part of this hectic month; in fact, I’m overjoyed that I’ve had the opportunity to travel, explore, and spend so much quality time with my family and friends. And I’m over the moon about the new studio. I’m so excited, I can’t sleep. I just want to Flex & Flow Yoga my little heart out….

But with my 100 miler now only a few short months away (eeeeeek), I was afraid that with everything going on, I wouldn’t find time for myself. I left for my roadtrip wondering just how far I’d slip on my workouts, how many excuses I would make not to run….or not to eat healthy. Of course I had the best intentions; I remember arriving in Long Beach on the first day of our roadtrip (en route to San Diego) and thinking to myself: whatever it takes. No excuses.

To help me stay on track and turn my good intentions into some kind of reality, I logged into the #holidaysweat challenge (thanks @FitApproach & @RuntotheFinish!) and promised myself that at the very least, I’d fit in a run every single day. And that motivated me to not only log my active minutes but also stay on track with my eating (gotta get those freggies in y’all!).

So even on that first day, after waking up at 4 am, hanging out with friends, and having a dinner to attend, I laced up my running shoes and started my trip on the right foot – and got out on the beach for a quick 4 miler.

And I’m happy to say brag that with the help of the #holidaysweat challenge sponsors (thanks prAna and Timex Sports) and motivation from the #holidaysweat community, I was able to stick to my guns. I ran every single day.

Even got up early the day of the Ironman to run.

Even found time to run in Albuquerque (we were only there for something like 8 hours!).

Even ran in the early morning  hours in Santa Fe when I could barely feel my fingers from the cold and wind…

Not all of my runs were long. Or fast. But miles were logged…and I’m happy to report that I even found time for workouts and yoga.

And I have never felt better. Or more proud of myself. I mean, damn, it feels good to show up for yourself.

And so it continues. Here’s to another great week of showing up for ourselves. Happy week three of the holiday sweat challenge and thanks to Me Mover for getting us all up and moving over this holiday week. #getmemoving

How are you staying motivated over the holidays?

Stay sweaty y’all!

XOXO,

Jamie
