And just like that, we’re three days into a brand new year. Goodbye 2018, hello 2019. Or, um, as the cool kids might say, thank you, NEXT.
This year, I joyfully opted out of New Year’s festivities, highlight reels, the best nines, resolutions, goal setting, and all the rah, rah, rah that comes at us each new year ad nauseam. I woke up on New Year’s Day before the sun (way, way, wayyyyy before the sun – thanks Colby) and I didn’t feel any different. In fact, I wasn’t any different. I went about my day like I would any other Tuesday. I fed my son, went on a run with Gixo, made breakfast, taught yoga, hung out with my family, worked, and did some much needed clean up around the house.
To put it even more simply, I continued putting one foot in front of the other.
Now don’t get me wrong, my lack of celebration for the new year ahead isn’t because I dread it or because I had a bad 2018. In fact, I’d say I had a pretty magical 2018 (all politics aside, of course).
It’s just that I don’t need a highlight reel, or a declarative statement to define who I am, where I’m headed, or what I want to become, I just need to keep moving. Forward progress is really all that ever matters – in life, career, and even fitness – as long as you keep moving, you’ll keep growing, learning and evolving. I don’t know about you but I don’t need a special countdown or champagne toast to remind me of that.
And this year, like every other year, I just want to take each day as it comes and use my time – the most valuable and precious thing we have – as wisely as I can. I don’t know what 2019 holds and neither do you (unless you’re a wizard) but what I do know is that I’m going to continue to do my best. I’m going to show up for myself and for others, and I’m going to give myself the space, time, and grace to laugh, live, love, and make mistakes along the way.
I hope you’ll step into this new year with me, one foot in front of the other, knowing that it will be imperfect, beautiful, messy, and worth it.
And as I continue to move forward with this big, messy, beautiful thing we call life, I invite you all to join me and connect with me on fitness, parenting, and outdoor adventuring!
