I’m a total Hunger Games nerd so take this review with a grain of salt. But I freaking LOVED it. The funny thing is I was a bit disappointed by the third book and actually liked the movie (or at least the first half of it) way BETTER. It’s still not as good as the second movie (that’s gonna be a hard one to top) but it was still really good. The end was seriously crazy.
During the movie, I couldn’t help but think about all the parallels between the Hunger Games and The Bachelor (or really most reality TV for that matter). I mean, think about it. First you have The Bachelor bubble and much like the Hunger Games arena, they are pretty much isolated from the outside world for most of the show. And then, you have the game maker – ahem, Chris Harrison – who is always busy setting up dates, different scenarios (or opportunities for good TV) and helping the viewing audience understand what is happening from start to finish (playing up the drama, the romance, getting all the angles just right).
And let’s not forget the Careerists; they are like killer versions of people like Michelle Money, Graham, and AshLee – you know the ones who can’t turn down yet another Bachelor franchise show – it’s almost like they’re a by product of The Bachelor in their almost perfectly scripted crazy-ness, their super sculpted, perfect bodies, and their seemingly endless supply of formal evening attire.
And Katniss, well, she’s the Bachelorette, of course. Everyone competing for her admiration and love – and not just Gale & Peeta – but pretty much everyone outside the Capitol wants a piece.
Anyway, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, I highly recommend that you go see it. And maybe watch Hunger Games 1 and 2 beforehand to refresh yourself on all that has happened. We watched the second one again and it was nice to have the continuity. I’m thinking we’ll do a full marathon of Hunger Games when the last movie comes out…and I can’t wait…no, really I can’t wait another year.
Stay Sweaty friends!
XOXO,
Jamie
